Growing up, two things were a given for me on Sundays. 1) I’d have a pretty church dress to wear, and 2) I’d have a slip on under it.
I don’t remember when I started wearing slips; it was just a thing I did. My mom did it, so I did it. And I’ve continued doing it for 20, OK, 30-some years.
And I’m still shocked that some people don’t. I mean, maybe you don’t care that people can see through your clothes, but I, for one, do. So, I own long slips, half slips, black slips, white slips. All of the slips.
And while my loyalty to the world of slips has been shown over and over again, I have to admit, I didn’t wear a single one last summer. And I wore dresses almost every day!
No, I’m not newly interested in showing the world the details of my underwear; I just found a really good alternative and need you to know about it too!

If you’re not already familiar, welcome to the world of: the slip short.
What to Know About Slip Shorts

What are slip shorts?
They’re pretty much what they sound like: shorts that act like a slip, and if you haven’t tried them yet, let’s remedy that ASAP. Slip shorts are basically long underwear – kind of like thin biker shorts, that are super comfortable and perfect for wearing under dresses, skirts, or pants.
You can wear them over your underwear, or as your underwear, if you so choose. They are seamless undergarments that give you a smooth silhouette while also keeping your dresses and skirts flowing perfectly. The perfect way to stay comfortable and cool!

How are slip shorts similar or different from regular slips?
They are smooth and provide an extra layer like a slip (to help with any see-through issues), but there are some differences , too. Unlike a slip, you don’t have to worry about it getting twisted as you move. The longer leg helps stop leg chafing, too.
Plus, if your dress or skirt blows up in the wind (thanks, Oklahoma), you’re a little more covered!
They look like shapewear. Do they fit like shapewear?
No. While shapewear could provide some of the same benefits of the slip shorts (smoothing, preventing leg-chafing, etc.), slip shorts are not constrictive at all.
They’re like a really thin pair of stretchy shorts. Kind of like bike shorts, but thinner. (And you’re not going to want to wear them on their own!)
They do sell some slip shorts that are labeled as “control” or “slimming”; those will fit more like shapewear. The kind I have are just super thin, comfy shorts, perfect for a hot day.
Fit Guide: Should I size up?
Stick to your regular size. I sized up on the first pair I bought because I thought they’d be tighter fitting, but they’re not. If you usually buy underwear in a size large, buy them in large. (Sizes xs = xs, medium = medium, etc.)
Where can you buy women’s slip shorts?
All over!
I bought mine at Target, but they’re available on Amazon and pretty much any major retailer that sells undergarments or slips. I’ve only worn the Jockey brand because they’re very affordable and I like the seamless design, so I can’t comment on any other brands currently.
Are there an array of options? Sure. Could you purchase some that are of a high quality fabric? Of course. But mine have held up and washed well and I’ll keep wearing this brand unless I try something else that works better!

Do I really need a pair?
No.
You actually need two. :) Well, I have two and could probably use another pair.
I own a black pair for dark dresses and a beige pair for lighter colored dresses. Both are frequently rotated throughout the week! I’m even considering a pair of shorter ones too.

Maybe slip shorts aren’t the most exciting purchase you could make this week, but I promise you, you’ll reach for them over and over!
