It’s one of my favorite times of the year! Fall/Winter Fashion Week started last week and we are in full swing!
While I LOVE this time of year, you may not really care. You may be under the impression that this is just a week full of exclusive events in NYC that cater to celebs and won’t affect you at all considering you can’t afford any of those labels. Well, you’re wrong.
Why you should care:
Pure vision: Fashion week allows the designer to share their unadulterated vision. Once the clothes leave the runway, they are manipulated by stylists and and customers. Their vision now becomes your vision.
Availability: Designers are now taking advantage of technology and utilizing a digital platform to share their product. What was once out of reach for the regular customer, is now available at your finger tips. Many shows are broadcast live and some designers go the digital route entirely and skip a live runway show.
It will be in your closet: Maybe you aren’t buying Chanel, but you might be buying the design. Where do you think your Forever 21 skirt’s inspiration came from? Yes, these lines have their own in-house designers, but don’t pretend like they aren’t knocking off the latest designs coming down the runway. (In fact, there has been many a law suit to prove it.)
What’s Coming: Fashion Week gives us a glimpse at coming trends. The designs we will see over the next week represent what will be in our closets months from now, and in some cases, weeks! If you work in design, retail, or anything fashion related, you have to pay attention to the trends coming out of FW. Plus, if you care at all about staying current with your wardrobe, you’ve got to know what’s going on. This isn’t just limited to the clothes! Many a lipstick shade, nail color, or hair style trend started during Fashion Week!
What to Keep: Not only does Fashion Week give us a glimpse at new trends, but we also get to see what is sticking around and what to move to the back of your closet. Will lace be in or out? What about the mid-length skirt? The mini? Pastels or jewel tones? We shall see.
Fresh Ideas: Fashion week provides a great opportunity for new designers to introduce themselves to the world. So pay attention to the new faces you see. They could be the next big thing.
It Boosts the Economy: Fashion Week both provides the hosting city and a wealth of other industries with a huge increase in economic support. Think hotels, restaurants, tourism, transportation, not to mention fabric stores, makeup artists, models, clothing manufacturers, zipper manufacturers, etc., etc., etc.
So, I hope you’ll join me this year in paying a little bit closet attention to what’s coming down the runway! And now it’s easier than ever! For the full schedule and links to live coverage, go here.
