I’ve got Part 2 today of my post on breaking all those ridiculous fashion “rules” we’ve heard forever. Missed Part 1? Check it out here.
6. No Sequins for Daytime
Should you save your sequined ballgown for a fancy affair? Probably. Can you get away with sequins during the daytime? Definitely! I love a sequin item for a casual look.
7. Your Bag, Shoes, and Belt Must Match
This is a dad thing, right? Shoes and belts matching? Well I’m guessing if you’re reading this, you’re probably not a dad so skip it and play with different colors, patterns, and textures. So while you definitely can match everything:
You can also try something like this!
If you’re a little unsure about going too bold, keep tones in a similar family.
8. If You’re “Plus Size”, Stick to Black
How many times have you been told to dress in black to look slimmer? The main thing to note here is to find what works on you, no matter the size! Perfectly fitting in any color beats black and shapeless any day!
I’m a subscriber to Marie Claire and one column I enjoy is “Big Girl in a Skinny World” geared toward the “full-figured fashionista”. Past columnist Ashley Falcon and current, Nicolette Mason are known for their super chic style and pick really great, bold pieces for women who maybe aren’t a size 2, or 6, or even 12. Guess what? You can actually wear color! And prints! And whatever else you want! Just find what works for you!
9. No Red Lipstick for Daytime
Break out the red lipstick but keep the rest of the look fresh and natural. If you’re doing bold lips, go easy on the eyes and cheeks.
10. Take Off One Accessory Before You Leave
I remember thinking this was a real rule when I was a kid. So, if I’m only wearing a bracelet, I should just take it off, right? Accessorizing is supposed to be fun! And if your idea of fun is a bracelet (or 3), and a necklace, AND earrings, go for it. Sure some looks call for simple accessorizing, but again, how you dress is personal to you!
Remember, getting dressed is all about developing your own unique style. So forget the rules and live a little! And let me know which rules you plan on breaking!
